A relaxed plain knit's courses, wales and stitch density depend on the loop length and on nothing else — not the yarn count, not the fibre, not the machine gauge. The constants are measured rather than derived, and the interesting thing about the published set is that it does not quite satisfy its own arithmetic.
A knit relaxes for as long as it is allowed to
Munden's three states are usually given as three sets of constants. Read as a path they are two steps, they compose exactly, and the second is not a smaller version of the first — the fabric shrinks twice as much along its courses as across its wales on the first step and rather less than half as much on the second.
